How to Prepare for a Remote Reiki Healing Session

Reiki is a sacred practice of channeling universal life force energy to bring healing to the body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in early 20th-century Japan, Reiki means “universal energy” and is based on the idea that unseen energy flows through us and around us. When this energy is balanced, we feel healthy and whole. When this energy is disrupted, it can lead to emotional, physical, or spiritual imbalances.

Although Reiki traditionally involves hands-on healing, the practice has gracefully evolved. Remote or distance Reiki allows you to receive the same restorative benefits without the need to be physically present with the practitioner. With intention, connection, and universal energy, healing knows no limits of space or time.

As more people seek holistic ways to find peace and wellness from home, remote Reiki has emerged as a powerful and accessible tool for transformation. At Luminara, we are so proud to be leaders in the remote healing world. Whether you're seeking emotional release, spiritual clarity, or physical ease, this gentle modality can be a deeply nourishing part of your healing journey.

Who is Reiki Good For?

Reiki is a universal modality that meets you where you are. It’s ideal for anyone who desires to reconnect with their inner balance. Whether you're feeling emotionally overwhelmed, physically drained, mentally fatigued, or spiritually disconnected, Reiki can help support you.

Many people turn to Reiki during times of stress or transition. It offers a non-invasive, calming presence that supports healing on multiple levels. Those living with anxiety, depression, or grief often find solace in Reiki’s gentle energy. It's also helpful for people navigating chronic conditions like fatigue, pain, or insomnia, as it encourages the body’s natural healing response.

It’s important to note that all healing modalities, including Reiki, are not only for times of crisis. They are equally beneficial for those who simply want to maintain a sense of inner harmony and mindfulness. Whether you’re beginning a new chapter in your life or simply looking to stay grounded, Reiki is a deeply supportive practice that invites you to slow down and receive.

How Remote Reiki Works

At its core, Reiki is energy, and energy is not bound by physical limitations. Remote Reiki works through the practitioner's focused intention and connection with universal life force energy. Just as you can send love or offer prayer across distances, Reiki can be sent and received with sincerity and impact, no matter where you are in the world.

During a remote session, your Reiki practitioner will tune into your energy field while you rest in a quiet, undisturbed space. The session may begin with a short conversation or meditation to ground your energy and open your heart to receive. From there, the practitioner channels healing energy to you while you lie back, relax, and simply allow.

You might experience sensations like warmth, tingling, or a sense of deep peace. Emotional releases are common, as well as visual imagery or spiritual messages. Every session is unique, but all invite you into a state of greater clarity, calm, and connection. You don’t need to "do" anything, just be open, present, and ready to receive.

Preparations Before Your Session

One of the most empowering aspects of remote Reiki is how simple it is to prepare. You don’t need to travel, wear anything fancy, or invest in special tools. All you need is the intention to receive, and a space that allows you to fully relax and be present.

To begin, make sure you have a device (smartphone, tablet, or computer) that allows you to log into your session. At Luminara, all of our remote healing sessions are hosted directly on our platform.

Next, ensure you are wearing something comfortable. Soft, breathable clothes that allow you to lie down and feel at ease are recommended.

Finally and most importantly, find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. Whether it’s your bedroom, a cozy corner, or a nook filled with calming elements, choose a place where you can fully surrender to the session. Silence your notifications, let others in your household know you’re not to be disturbed, and allow yourself this uninterrupted time of self-care. You deserve it!

Recommended Setup for Optimal Healing

While Reiki works regardless of setting, the environment you create can enhance the depth of your healing. Think of it as crafting a mini sanctuary that reflects your intention for inner peace.

Ideally, you’ll want a comfortable surface to lie on such as a yoga mat with cushions, your bed, or a sofa. Make sure your body feels fully supported so you can relax without distraction. Consider dimming the lights or closing the curtains to create a more restful ambiance.

You may wish to place a towel or soft eye mask over your eyes. While not essential, it can deepen your sense of surrender and block out visual distractions. Some people find this increases their sensitivity to the subtle sensations of energy flow.

Using headphones or earbuds is highly recommended, especially if your session includes calming music or a guided meditation from your practitioner. Good audio helps you stay immersed in the experience and keeps your mind anchored in relaxation.

Lastly, infuse your space with elements that bring you joy and comfort whether that’s candles, incense, essential oils, crystals, or your favorite blanket. These items aren't necessary, but they act as gentle signals to your nervous system: it’s time to relax, it’s safe to receive.

What You Might Feel During the Reiki Session

As the session begins, your only job is to lie back, close your eyes, and allow. Reiki flows where it’s needed most, gently and intuitively. Each person experiences Reiki differently, and each session is its own journey. Stay open to whatever may come up for you during your session as your experience is completely unique to you.

You might feel warmth or tingling in different parts of your body. Some people sense waves of energy, colors, or light. Others may find themselves drifting in and out of sleep, which is totally fine and a beautiful sign of deep healing at work. Emotional release is also common, as energy blocks begin to soften and move. You may cry, sigh, cough as well.

There’s no “right” way to experience Reiki. Even if you feel nothing at all, trust that the energy is working beyond what the conscious mind can perceive. Your commitment to showing up, surrendering, and receiving is already a healing in itself.

Post-Reiki Session Care

Once your remote Reiki session is done, take your time. There’s no need to rush back into your day. Give yourself space to gently reawaken, stretch, or breathe deeply. You’ve just received energetic healing and it’s important to honor that experience with presence and care.

Many people feel a sense of lightness or emotional clarity afterward, while others may feel a bit tender or sleepy. Both are normal. Reiki continues working in the hours and sometimes days after your session, subtly integrating into your system.

It can be deeply nourishing to journal about your experience. What sensations did you feel? Did any emotions rise to the surface? Were there any messages, images, or insights that came through? Writing them down can help you process and deepen your awareness of the healing you’ve received.

Lastly, please don’t forget to hydrate. Just like a massage, energy work can stir things up at both a cellular and emotional level, and drinking water helps your body and energy field stay fluid and grounded.

Tips for Maximizing Long-Term Benefits

To get the most out of Reiki, consider it not just a one-time event, but a practice. A relationship with your own healing journey. Consistency, even if it's once a month or during life’s more challenging seasons, can create profound shifts over time.

Creating rituals around your sessions can amplify the effects. You might light the same candle each time, or set a specific intention beforehand. This helps signal to your spirit that you are stepping into a sacred experience.

Reiki also pairs beautifully with other wellness practices like meditation, breathwork, yoga, or journaling. These modalities support the energetic clearing and intuitive clarity that Reiki initiates, helping you embody the transformation that’s unfolding.

Perhaps most importantly, give yourself grace. Healing is not linear. Some sessions may feel light and blissful, others more emotional or intense. All are valid, all are healing in their own way. Trust your body, trust the energy, and trust the journey.

Embracing the Power of Remote Healing

In a world that often asks us to go faster, achieve more, and stay busy, Reiki is a sacred pause. A return to your breath, your body, your soul. Remote Reiki proves that healing doesn’t require being in a practitioner’s office, it requires your willingness to receive, your openness to grace.

By preparing your space with intention, embracing the session with presence, and allowing time to reflect afterward, you invite the full essence of Reiki into your life. It’s more than energy, it’s love in motion, light in stillness, healing across the unseen threads that connect us all.

Whether this is your first session or part of your regular spiritual practice, know that Reiki meets you exactly where you are, and gently guides you home to yourself.
